GEN BOOMER: All right.
1STLT BELL: Sir, today the weather for Baghdad will be partly
cloudy to overcast skies, with visibility five to seven miles of
haze, two to four in precipitation; surface winds northwesterly
10 to 15 knots, gusts up to 24. There will be a temporary
condition where there will be two miles of thundershowers with
blowing sand; high of 68 and low of 44. Kuwait, partly cloudy
skies, surface visibility of five to seven miles; winds
northwesterly at 12 to 15 knots, gusts up to 24; high of 72 and
low of 46.
As you were briefed, General, there was a record high of
211 total sorties yesterday; 139 fighters, 40 transports, 13
helicopters, one recon and 16 unidentified. This is the highest
rate we have ever detected in the KTO and throughout Iraq.
Wednesday tends to be the highest day throughout the week;
however, the 139 fighters reported has been the total number of
sorties we have seen over in several days. Although it was
mostly routine, there were 45 night flights detected - 18 that
were up in the 31 parallel on south.
Of note, helicopters have been detected north of the
Basrah area. We had 19 at two separate field locations, one in
this vicinity here and one slightly north of there in the
vicinity of an unidentified infantry division.
GEN BOOMER: Excuse me a second. Bruce, do a comparison for me
as to what that sortie rate, 139 yesterday, looks like compared
to their total air force, compared to what we run throughout the
theater on an average day.
LTCOL BRUNN: Will do, sir.
1STLT BELL: Sir, on the -- in comparing their flight activity
and ours, it technically does not compare. We have been running
a significant amount, both in American forces vice what they in
in their inventory. They have about 1,000 aircraft; and by this
flying 211 out of that 1,000, including their rotary wing, they
are not even keeping up with western standards; but we tend to
compare them to our standards. They very well may be quite
capable of running on less than what we consider standard
proficiency.
COL FUCHS: Those are the ones we detect. We don't know how many
we don't detect.
ISTLT BELL: We are able to pick up some of them with our AWACS.
GEN BOOMER: We probably don't miss too many.
COL FUCHS: Sir, we have been flying about 1200 sorties a day in
country for U.S. forces.
