   24 December 1990

GEN BOOMER: When is that frontal system supposed to come through
   here; do you know?

   1STLT BELL: No, sir, I don't know.

GEN BOOMER: If it becomes as bad as the other day, it could
   influence flying the Commandant around.

1STLT BELL: Yes, sir. Sir, today the weather for Baghdad,
partly cloudy, visibility of four to six miles haze, surface
winds from the northwest to the west, gusts up to 24. There's a
temporary condition where the sky will be two miles of blowing
sand. High of 60 and low of 37. Kuwait, partly cloudy,
visibility four to six miles haze and dust, surface winds
northwesterly ton to 14 knots, gusts up to 22. Also a condition
where the sky will be obscured with three miles blowing sand in
the vicinity; high of 65 and low of 41.

Yesterday, aircraft activity was routine, in the average.
   A total of 153 sorties flown; 98 fighters, 39 transports, 11
helicopters, four unidentified, one possible bomber. They
conducted air combat maneuvers, ground control interception and
mission in zone. As part of the transports, we had five into Ali
Al Salem and four leave back to Baghdad; and out of the Basrah
area as well. Also one of the transports that did fly into Ali
Al Salem picked up fighter escort at Shuaybah and lost the
fighter escort when they landed and the fighters returned to
Shuaybah. Its been assessed as VIC cargo or high value cargo.
We believe now they are more in tune with trying to practice
escorting and also shadowing on the transports.

In naval order of battle, the Iraqi Navy continues to
conduct limited operations in the northern Persian Gulf. Most of
their assets in ports at Az Zawr and Qulayah. 5 U.S.C. 552
They continue to be more defensive in nature with dispersing the (b)(1)
vessels from the military side of the port, and also disbursing
some of their OSAS down to Ash Shuaybah and Ras al Qulayah.

Under counterintelligence, the CINC has issued a
temporary increase to "high" and "Charlie" from 23 December to 2
January. It's a precautionary measure only, and not related to
specific incidents or occurrences, but due to the time of the
year and the intelligence information we have received and
potential action during this time frame, sir.

   GEN BOOMER: Okay.

G-3 AIR: Morning, sir. From Saturday, MAG-11 provided 20 SIMCAS
sorties in support of ground units. VMGR-352 is in the process
