0500-Planned operations:
Ist MarDiv: TF Shepherd passes through TF Ripper
and screens forward; TF Ripper attacks toward MEF Objective C
(Al Magwa); TF'Grizzly clears pockets of resistance vicinity of
Al Jabar Airfield; TF Taro helicopter borne attack into battle
position Xray, with infantry and TOWs northeast of division
area, protects against enemy forces from east and northeast.
2D MarDiv: Attacks Division Objective #1 (Ice
Cube Tray) at first light and continues to MEF Objective B at Al
Jahra.
5th MEB: Off-load and positioning continues.
P.M. recap: Six AH-LW Cobras from 4th MEB launched
from USS Shreveport in support of lst MarDiv, will chop to
MAG-26 at Lonesome Dove for as long as needed. 2D MarDivls
Tiger BDE west of Phase Line Red has destroyed 50 to 60 T-55
tanks, combined with air have killed 170 enemy vehicles and
tanks; taken many EPW. Ist MarDiv observed many enemy personnel
and armor at Al Burquan oil field; fired on them with artillery
TOT, flushed enemy out of positions, engaged with AH-l's and
direct fire weapons; destroyed 50 to 60 Iraqi tanks, unknown
number of APC's and trucks; TF Shepherd captured 20 T-62 tanks
and 40 APC'S; TF Taro spotted (late P.M.) 50 tanks approximately
4 Km away with tank crews sitting on tank talking and smoking;
TF Taro is going after them. lst MarDiv has 600 EPW and 2D
MarDiv has 1500 and growing. I MEF plan is to consolidate at
present locations and prepare for tomorrow's attack.
53. 'tiQ,26 Feb 91.
a. 'rO-)..0130C: Baghdad radio announced Iraqi intentions to
commence their withdrawal from Kuwait. Saddam states that he
has been victorious in facing 30 allied nations; makes tacit
agreement to abide with U.N. resolutions.
b. +6@ N-2 briefed: Kuwaiti resistance reports Iraqi
convoys organizing to withdraw from Kuwait City. Heavy Iraqi
movement northward toward Basrah. Looks like Iraqi III Corps
moving northward. Iraqis fought coordinated effort against
JFC-E, but Saudis prevailed. EPW now beyond 20,000. Withdrawal
may be an attempt to reconstitute to defend Basrah rather than a
retreat to quit. SCUD launch destroyed U.S. Army quartermaster
barracks near Dhahran; killed approximately 25 soldiers, many
more wounded. No Iraqi helicopter activity. No other Iraqi air
activity. Iranians have placed many Silkworms in firing
positions.
C. +6@ Operations: CTF-158 conducted dawn helicopter/
Tacair demonstration vicinity of Bubiyan. USNAVCENT air
attacked Silkworm sites; no BDA (throughout the campaign,
Silkworm sites have never been totally confirmed, successfully
targeted, or conf-,! de royed; in short, they are still
