August, 250 nm north of the Island of Diego Garcia in the
Indian Ocean -- was, by 5 August, within range in the North
Arabian Sea and, if ordered, could have launched strikes
against Saddam Hussein's forces.


- By August 8th, the USS EISENHOWER battle group had

entered the Red Sea. Together with the INDEPENDBNCB
battle group, they provided a combat ready force of 164

aircraft and scores of.T?mahawk missiles re? dy to strike

Iraq from two directions.


--   The 2nd Maritime Prepositioning Squadron, or MPS,

cons}sting of ships loaded with Marine Corps equipment,

ammunition and supplies, stationed in Diego Garcia, sailed

at full speed on 8 August and was oft4oading its assets in Ai

Jubail, Saudi Arabia, on 15 August.  The 1st Marine Divisioi~
