By 10 September, this division was in place, combat ready
and stocked for 60 days of fighting.
- On 23 August, carrier SARATOGA and her group arrived
to add to the already formidable forces assembling to
confront Saddam Hussein. They were shortly joined by the
carrier KENNEDY in early September. This allowed
EISENHOWER to return to CONUS for previously
scheduled maintenance.
- On 10 August, the two U.S. hospital ships COMFORT
and MERCY were activated. By 23 September, both ships
were steaming in the Persian Gulf. It should be noted that
the Navy provided the majority of medical support early in
Desert Shield and a substantial part of that available in
