 - UN economic sanctions were implemented on 6 August.

 This embargo has been enforced by maritime forces

 exclusively since that day, throughout the 39-day war, and

 interdiction operaflons. continue even as we speak.  The

 numbers which reflect this enforcement effoft are

 remarkable:

                     more than 8500 challenges

                               1100 plus boardings

                approximately  60 diversions


 The UN sanctions eliminated over 90% of Iraqi imports and
