station and accou ed for 17% of sick call visits there. The
most common (1, il blems were broken fillings, pericoronitis
from erupti],Cl@t,.hird molars, and abscessed teeth. other problems
included @ohdentures, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
ulcers. During the war, root canal procedures and
ex of impacted wisdom teeth were prohibited in soldiers
near the front lines because post-surgical swelling
could hinder the placement, wear and seal of the gas mask.
Accurate incidence rates for specific disease categories
were only obtainable for the four squadron aid stations where the
population size was known. These data are shown in Figure 2.
The percentage of total visits to the aid stations and clearing
station for specific disease categories, by week, is shown in
Figure 3.
Two deaths occurred in 3d ACR soldiers prior to the ground
war. one death was caused by a ruptured berry aneurysm in a
previously healthy-appearing soldier. The second soldier was
found dead in his closed vehicle. The engine was running during
the night. Although carbon monoxide poisoning was suspected, a
definitive cause even after postmortem examination has not been
identified.
