         a journey of 100 to 150 miles which took one to two days by

         ground vehicle. Data from the individual medical components was

         meticulously collected during deployment and constitutes the best

         available U.S. Army data on outpatient visits during the Persian

         Gulf Conflict. Information regarding inpatient care at higher

         levels of medical support, such as Combat Support Hospitals,

         Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals, Evacuation Hospitals and Fleet
         Hospitals are provided in other reports. 1-6

             The population base for patients seen at the squadron aid

         stations remained constant because these aid stations provided

         primary care to virtually all soldiers in their respective

         squadrons. Consequently, disease incidence based on outpatient

         visits at this level could be readily obtained (Figure 2).

         Patients seen at the clearing station, on the other hand,

         reflected a diversity of origins. Patient numbers and origins

         varied with location of the clearing station, length of time at

         that location, nonorganic units in proximity, traffic flow

         through the area, types and severity of medical problems

         encountered, military operations and alternate sources of medical

         care. Consequently, rates of illness and injury for the entire 3d
