                                                                                10

ACR cannot be obta@ned, but are reflected by the relative

percentage of?@ health problems seen at all 3d ACR medical

          fac d (Figure 3).

ic orthopedic problems accounted for the largest

of outpatient visits, followed by unintended

i two categories also accounted for the greatest

s of lost duty days and evacuations from theater .2,7,8 Many
of these were potentially preventable. 7-10

With time, the incidence of non-traumatic orthopedic

problems seen at sick call decreased at the forward aid stations

(Figure 2). On the other hand, the incidence of orthopedic

problems at the clearing station, as reflected by percent of

total visits to both the aid stations and clearing stations,

remained relatively constant (Figure 3), largely as a result of

patient referrals to the clearing station. The support of an

orthopedic PA at the clearing station was invaluable in

addressing complicated orthopedic problems and reducing referrals

to higher levels of medical support.'

As expected, sick call visits for respiratory illness peaked

during the winter months. The incidence of dermatologic problems

remained at relatively low levels as a result of generally good

field hygiene promoted through command channels and of operations

in a dry environment. The low incidence of ophthalmologic

problems in part reflects the use of goggles during sandstorms

and common sense measures, such as staying undercover during

          sandstorms.
