Acute diarrh@@ caused by Shigella spp. and enterotoxigenic

Escherichia problem encountered in U.S. Army, Navy and

Marine for ring the early months of Operation Desert

Shield. \V own in neighboring countries, presumably
fear, th human waste, were probably the initial source of
e@ gens. 11, 12 Many cases of diarrhea in these units also

ly occurred as a result of secondary person-to-person
         spread."

Compared to other military units, the 3d ACR experienced
comparatively little diarrheal illness."""" This was probably

due to communication by the Navy Forward Lab of diarrheal illness

transmitted by fresh vegetables when the 3d ACR arrived in

theater and excellent support from 3d ACR commanders. With

command support, fresh, potentially contaminated vegetables were

excluded, and the use of portable hand washing facilities near

latrines and mess halls was enforced.

Three localized outbreaks of diarrheal illness occurred.

The first two outbreaks occurred in two separate self-propelled

Howitzer companies belonging to different squadrons. Diarrheal

symptoms were relatively mild. Natural separation of the two

companies from other units in the squadron kept the illness

confined. The third outbreak of diarrheal illness was more

severe and occurred in the aviation squadron one to two days

after Christmas dinner. This was the only squadron to

inadvertently receive fresh vegetables while in the field and

only received them on this one occasion. Investigation of this

outbreak revealed that the vegetables were incompletely
