         Prevention of heat injuries included water discipline, work-rest

         cycles, gradual acclimatization and limitation of work during the

         first several weeks in country. Cold injuries were prevented by

         availability of warm clothing and use of heaters. This

         experience contrasts dramatically with the experience of World

         War II in the Persian Gulf, in which heat injuries and dysentery

         resulted in significant loss of manpower with attendant
         logistical problems in replacing soldiers during combat.18
              Based on historical experiences"," and published reports,   20-22

         there was concern over many infectious diseases in the area of

         operations. Fortunately, many of these diseases, such as

         cholera, giardiasis, amoebiasis, helminthic infections, malaria,

         and sandfly fever, did not affect 3d ACR soldiers. The reasons

         for the absence of these diseases include 1) limited contact

         with nonmilitary populations, 2) inspection and approval of food
         sources by U.S. military veterinarians  , 21, 24 3) inspection of

         storage and preparation of food by preventive medicine

         personnel, 25 4) consumption of bottled water or chlorinated well
         or sea water after processing through military ROWPU's    2 6 ,5) a
         good host country preventive medicine infrastructure  17 , 6) an
