restrictions on sexual activity within the unit.

Prohibition of alcohol most likely contributed to the

relatively low levels of injuries, and mental health
problems. 17, 29-" Although alcoholic beverages were missed by some

soldiers, the successful, professional, and safe operation of

soldiers in an environment requiring alert and keen thinking

argues strongly for the restriction of alcohol during future

conflicts. Anecdotally, tobacco use among soldiers markedly

increased, a phenomenon which occurred throughout theater .31

Emotional issues raised during the Gulf conflict included

family separation, removal from training experiences, concerns

based on the military's experience from Viet Nam, fear of the

unknown, political conflicts back home regarding the value of

soldier's lives or the cause being defended, boredom, disruption

of sleep, lack of creature comforts, unappealing meals, and

prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions.16'32 Boredom

was the single greatest threat to mental health and morale during

this campaign and was partially prevented by busy schedules for

training, preparation for exercises, physical workouts, sports

         and unit activities.
