AFTER ACTION REPORT: MEETING OF
THE AD HOC WORKING GROUP FOR THE MEDICAL
DEFENSE AGAINST BIOLOGICAL WARFARE
16 November 1990
1. (U) AGENDA (Enel 1).
2. (U) SIGN-IN-ROSTER (Enol 2).
3. (U) PURPOSE: To assess the biological warfare (BW) Lt
against U.S. Forces in support of operation Desert Shieli
to evaluate the AMEDDs ability to respond with emphasis i
Detection and Surveillance, Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prev, L,
including Personal Protective Measures, Chemoprophylaxis
vaccination.
4. SUMMARY OF MEETING:
a. (U) The After Action Report from the Ad Hoc Wor'.
Group's meeting of 2 November 1990 was reviewed and stooi
written.
b. Ingelligence Update. AFMIC was not repress: Lt
the meeting; however, a representative from Preventive Mi Le
updated the committee on current intelligence information
supplied from AFMIC the previous day. There has been no le
in the intelligence estimate since the meeting of 2 Novei
1990.
C. (U) LaboratorV Update. The Navy is continuing k
on requesting personnel from the other services to augme:
Navy Forward Laboratory (NFL). In addition, the Army is
considering placing an area laboratory in-theater which
be located in closer proximity to the Army troop
concentrations. This action would reduce the logistical
problems of transporting collected specimens to a distan-
location as well as decreasing the time it would take to n
the laboratory results.

Tri-service DOD task force continues to meet. The task
has completed their preliminary report. They identifed
few facilities, either commerical or federal, who are wi,
or able to manufacture anthrax and botulinum vaccines. I
members of the task force are operating under very stric-
restrictions concerning the release of this information ;
therefore, no other details of their findings were discui Lt
this meeting. The BW issue will again be discussed in ti
IITANK" on 21 November 1990 and particular attention will
placed on the on-going antibiotic studies in animals.
