         SUBJECT: Medical Biological Warfare (BW) Defense Readines
         U.S. Forces in Operation Desert Shield/Storm (U)

         1. (U) Purpose: To provide information on the medical BW         ise
         readiness for U.S. Forces in Operation Desert Shield/Storm

         2.  @ Facts:

             a. +64,From 1988 to the start of operation Desert Shi

         became part of the stockpile when it transitioned from Mil
         III at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Comm

         Operation Desert Shield occurred. only limited stocks had
         accumulated, and production surge in Aug 90 could not meet
         requirements because limited industrial base and strict Fo-
         Drug Administration requirements for vaccine safety and Po,
         Although Army owned the Bw vaccines at the onset of Operat
         Desert Shield, Army immediately made the stockpile availab.      the
         services to be used according to CENTCOM priorities.

         capabilities are decreasing because of low profits and higi
         liabilities.
