            SUBJECT: Early indications of need f or USE of Repellent by
            soldiers of Operation Desert Storm.


            1. References:

                 a. interviews with patients evacuated to the Walter Read
            Army Medical Center (WRANC) for treatment of multiple leishmanial
            lesions caused by Leishmania major.

                 b. various scientif ic and technical papers on Laishmania in
            the Gulf regions with specific emphasis on Saudi Arabia.

                 c. New Army Extended Duration Repellent Formulation (EDRP)
            use and ef f icacy data and information on its availability in
            theater. (APPHS Message)

            2. Common to all patients interviewed in rob.1991 with multiple
            lesions caused by sand fly bites which occurred in October-
            November 1990, Desert Shield, Saudi Arabia.*

                 a. Numerous small "cute" mouse-sized brown rodents (long
            tails, large ears, big feet) seen in the Area of operation (AO).

                 b. scarce vegetation in the form of low weedy bushes in
            otherwise sandy/rookey soil.

                 c. Never observed any small biting sand flies.

                 d. Wore not bothered by biting sand flies or mosquitoes.

                 a. Did not use repellent which may or may not have been
            available.

            3. Among the first 6 patients were two, (Ist CAV) a pilot and a
            communication technician whose exposure occurred in rear areas of
