PREVENTIVE MEDICINE SITUATION S Y REPORT
                                29 SEPTEMBER TO 12 OCTOBER 1990

               1. MISSION: No Change

               2. SITUATION AND CONSIDERATIONS

                   a. Enemy situation: No Change

                   b. Friendly situation:

                       (1) status of potable water supplies: Troops in some
front line areas report that cooled drinking water is not
available and that the consumption of hot water is required to
maintain adequate hydration. Cooling units for drinking water
have been deployed. See Encl 1: US Senate Letter, D.W. Riegle,
               27 September 1990; 7th MEDCOM EMAIL, 4 Oct 90, Subject, Field
               Conditions.

                       (2) Status of field sanitation facilities & devices:
Field sanitation facilities and devices (latrines, showers,
handwashing) in front line areas are primitive and limited in
number. These conditions will contribute to fly and other
insect vector control problems. See Encl 1: US Senate Letter,
               D.W. Riegle, 27 September 1990; 7th MEDCOM EMAIL, 4 Oct 90,
               Subject, Field Conditions.

                       (3) Status of food sanitation:

                            (a) Host country contract feeding facilities
designed to prepare and transport 200-300 meals a day are
preparing 1000-1500+ meals a day. Break downs in sanitation
can be expected with the continued overload placed on these
facilities. The ARCENT Veterinary officer is providing
guidance on maintaining high level of sanitation in contract
feeding operations. The Troop Support Agency reports that
 planned for construction
               in country.
                            (b) Heat induced quality degradation is being
reported in some food items. Swelling of cans and flexible
food packages result from exposure to high temperatures.
Preventive medicine, Veterinary personnel and food service
specialists are identifying and discarding swollen cans during
routine inspections. See Encl 2: STRVC-WTP Memorandum, 2
October 1990, Subject, Summary of Comments Received on Rations
and Actions Taken to Address Concerns.
