                                      UNCLASSIFIED

             1. (U) Lesson learned submitted by DASG-DC, John E. King,
             AVN 923-3657, (301)677-3657, 05/10/91.

             2. (U) TITLE: Dental/Medical Research during military operations

             3. (U) OBSERVATION: Dental/Medical research teams were not
utilized in the Desert Shield/Storm theater of operations.

             4. (U) DISCUSSION: Advanced military technology was the hallmark
of this operation. This technology is the result of an investment
in research and development. If the technology of dental/medical
support is to be improved in current and future operations,
research is required to identify dental/medical threats and to
identify dental /medical capability issues that require further
research and development. Development of now materials, procedures
and medications can reduce disease and injury interference with
operational effectiveness and reduce dental/medical resource
requirement in the theater of operations.

             5. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Research activities should be planned as
a routine part of dental/medical operations.

             6. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Medical Research and Development
Command should develop and staff plans for dental/medical research
support to military operations. It should review all AMEDD
doctrine for opportunities to include dental/medical research as
a routine of medical support to military operations. Training of
operations and theater dental surgeons and surgeons should include
             subjects on research capabilities.

             7. (U) COMMENTS: a. Although this observation was made
concerning dental operations, the lesson is not one unique to
dental research. b. Present assessment of dental support to
military operations relies heavily on anecdotal information with
very little valid data from actual operations. Research
opportunity would be very productive in improving dental support.
