                                      UNCLASSIFIED

             1. (U) Lesson learned submitted by DASG-DC, John E. King,
             AVN 923-3657, (301)677-3657, 05/10/91.

             2. (U) TITLE: Surveillance of oral health support for deploying
             units

             3. (U) OBSERVATION: Soon after the initiation of deployment of
active duty units and the mobilization of reserve units for
Operation Desert Shield it became clear that data on the dental
elements of the soldier readiness processing was not readily
available to major medical commands and office of the surgeon
General (OTSG) staff elements. Major medical command and OTSG
dental staff quickly responded by improvising a reporting system.

             4. (U) DISCUSSION: Data on dental operations supporting the
deployment and mobilization processing, (as well as
demobilization processing) is required for operational
adjustments to processing centers and establishing theater
support requirements. Mobilization of RC dental assets and
shifting of dental resources from one location to anther required
data on the dental classification profile of units and on dental
             panocjraphic x-ray requirements.

             S. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Standardized dental activity reports are
needed to provide surveillance data for management decisions
concerning dental support to mobilization and deployments sites.

             6. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: RSC should document the dental
reporting system on deployment and mobilization it implemented on
Operation Desert Shield. This Document could be evaluated for
completeness and usefulness at each level of technical support
and revised for writing into doctrine.

             7. (U) COMMENTS: The requirement for automation and
port should be included in the assessment.
