SUBJECT: After Action Report - Army Occupational Therapy for
Operation Desert Shield/Storm
Part 1: Executive Summary
A. Mission/Objectives - The mission of Army occupational
therapists in Operation Desert Shield/Sto= was to provide:
1. Occupational Therapy support for the Psychiatric OM
Team (Combat Stress Control) to accomplish the reconditioning/
restoration mission. (One 65A and one 91L deployed with 528th OM
Team 15 Nov 90 - 18 April 91)
2. Occupational Therapy services in a Field Hospital in
areas of orthopedics and mental health. (One 65A deployed 27 Aug
90 - 24 Mar 91)
B. General Description - Army occupational therapists
supported orthopedics by providing therapy and adaptive devices
(splints) for orthopedically injured soldiers, served in a
garrison psychiatric role teaching classses on stress
management/prevention and treatment, and provided combat stress
control preventive and treament services in the field.
C. Major participants - One occupational therapist was
deployed with the 47th Field Hospital, Bahrain, 27 Aug 90 - 24
Mar 91. This individual also assisted with a stress control team
of the 28th CSH providing classes on stress management/prevention
and treatment. One occupational therapist (65A) and one enlisted
(91L) deployed with the 528th Psychiatric OM Team, 15 Nov 90 -
18 Apr 91. These individuals provided combat stress control
preventive and treatment services.
D. Significant Issues
1. The 47th Field Hospital was late in receiving DEPMEDS
equipment. To alleviate this problem, care packages were sent
from Fort Sill, Tripler, and WRAMC with needed supplies for
the officer had also hand carried
some supplies for splinting and hand rehabilitation.
2. The 65A and 91L with the Psychiatric OM Team had to
be added to the unit to prior to deployment. This required much
coordination between HSC and OTSG. After implementation of
Medical Force 2000 (MF2K), we will have adequate 65As and 9lLs in
Combat Stress Control (CSC) companies and detachments.
