DESERT SHIELD
PREVENTIVE MEDICINE SITUATION SUMMARY REPORT
I - 31 DECEMBER 1990
1. MISSION: No Change.
2. SITUATION AND CONSIDERATIONS
a. Enemy situation: No Change
b. Friendly situation:
(1) Status of PVNTMED readiness: Command emphasis on
individual and unit level preventive medicine measures continue
to be satisfactory. Major commands have provided excellent
preventive medicine guidance and training to deploying units.
Field sanitation team training for deployed units is being
provided by supporting PVNTMED assets. See Encl 1: SGPS-PSP
Information Paper, 26 December 1990, Subject, PVNTMED Support
for Operation Desert Shield; Encl 2: USARIEM Technical Note
91-1, December 90, Subject, Sustaining Health and Performance
in The Desert (cover sheet only).
(2) Status of potable water supplies: An estimated
85,000 cases of bottled water are being locally purchased (1.02
million 1.5 liter bottles). Preventive medicine personnel are
sampling bottled water and inspecting bottling facilities. As
water production and distribution points are established the
use of bottled water is expected to decrease. Coliform
persistence at chlorination levels of 10 ppm'has been observed
in large 50,000 gallon storage tanks when precleaning and
superchlorination was not accomplished before filling. Source:
informal reports and observations from PVNTRED personnel in
country.
(3) Status of field sanitation facilities & devices:
Combat Support Hospitals are projected to generate
astewater per day (including
shower, laundry, kitchen, and surgical). Soil conditions in
some areas severely limit the use of "pita disposal
techniques. Disposal of wastewater from field medical
treatment facilities may become a problem when drastic
increases in patient loads are experienced. Source: informal
reports and observations from PVNTMED personnel in country.
(4) Status of food sanitation: Commercially produced
meals operational ready to eat (MORE) are being used to
supplement MRES. Food quality of MOREs has been satisfactory.
Problems with MORE packaging not being able to withstand the
stress of field transportation and handling have been
reported. Inspection of MOREs at logistic points by veterinary
personnel.
