(5) Status of preventive medicine aspects of NBC:
Chemical and biological defenses have been the subject of
ongoing review by a number of AMEDD workgroups during the past
weeks. Multiple layers of defense (protective equipment,
preventive medicine measures, and training) have been
identified for use by commanders. Preventive medicine measures
include the use of vaccines, antibiotics and antitoxins. S6e

c. Characteristics of the area of operations: No Change
d. Ifealth status of the command:
(1) Immunization requirements:
(a) Taberculin skin testing prior to deployment
to the Persian Gulf is not a requirement. Personnel (military
and civilian) returning to CONUS from assignment in the Persian
Gulf should receive a tuberculin skin test within two months of
return unless previously known to have a positive test. See
Encl IV: Message, HSC, 142214Z DEC 90, Subject; Additional
Preventive Medicine Guidance for operation Desert Shield.
(b) 1990-91 influenza vaccine should be
administered and documented prior to departure for Operation
Desert Shield. Influenza vaccine is available in theater for
those not previously immunized. See Encl IV: Message, HSC,
142214Z DEC 90, Subject: Additional Preventive Medicine
Guidance for Operation Desert Shield.
) Medical personnel deploying to Germany
require the usual processing for European assignment but do not
require POR for the Persian Gulf e.g. ISG, typhoid vaccine,
meningoccal vaccine, or chemoprophylaxis. See Encl IV:

(2) Tmmilnization status: Immune serum globulin (ISG)
given to deploying troops varied from 2.0 cc to 5.0 cc based on
amounts available at processing sites. To acquire adequate
quantities of ISG approval was obtained for procurement from
Sclavo, an Italian Company. See Encl V: information Paper,
