                       (3) Disease and nonbattle injury: Daily rates for
               hospital admissions have varied from 0.3 to 0.5 per 1000
               soldiers per day. Based on reports received during December
               the following outpatient data is provided-

                       (7) Other: The DASG Medical Issues Working Group
               (MIWG) has reviewed options for the purchase of cholera
               vaccine. A decision paper on cholera vaccine is being
               prepared. Other issues reviewed by the MXWG include use of
               typhoid TY21a vaccine, hepatitis A immunizations, and the
               current status of centoxin. See Encl 6: Kinutes of the Desert
               Shield Medical Issues Working Group, 27 December, 1990; Encl 7:

               3. CURRENT SITUATION

                  a. Resources available:

                       (1) Theater PVNTRED resources continue to increase
               with corresponding increases in troop strength.
                       (2) Community health nursing resources are severely
               limited. Program workloads have drastically increased at
               installations supporting Operation Desert Shield. At the same
               time a large number of community health nurses have be required
               to fill other positions to support installation and deployed
               medical treatment facilities. See Encl 8: Information Paper,
               SGPS-PSP, 10 Dec @ er 90, Subject, Desert Shield impact on
        Community Health Nursing Programs.

                  b. Preventive medicine courses of action: Continue to
               closely monitor disease threat in the theater and the movement
               of PVNTMED assets into theater.
