         MEMORANDLTM FOR RECORD

         SUBJECT: Drug and Vaccine Usage During Operation Desert
         Shield/Storm


         1. The following estimates are made concerning the use of drugs
         and vaccines during Operation Desert Shield/Storm:

              a. 250,000 service members took at least one (1) dosage of
         pyridostigmine bromide as a nerve agent pretreatment.

             b. 150,000 service members were administered at least one
         immunization against anthrax.

              C. 8,000 service members were administered at least one
         immunization of botulinum toxoid.

         2. It is recommended that these numbers be used by OTSG to
         respond to any further inquiries concerning drug and vaccine
         usage during operation Desert Shield/Storm.

         3. These numbers are best estimates based on conversations
         between myself and the CENTCOM, ARCENT, 18th AB Corps Surgeon's
         offices and with other medical officers deployed to Saudi Arabia.
         OTSG did not survey individual service members, review all
         deployed service member's medical records, or formally request
         the deployed units for this information.
