                                              OPERATION DESERT SHIELD

                                                                                  3 Sept. 1990
                                                                                      1415 local

Phone conversation with LtCol. Pinkston, HSC EOC indicates no change in
hospital status from Friday 31 August in TRADOC facilities.
At that time Ft. Banning was reporting Red and Fts. Dix and Lee Amber.
LtCol. Pinkston felt that these were situations that would be rectified when
RC backfills were inprocessed. The item to be watched is the skills mix of
                those called to ACDU.

Tab a. Memo re: CSA question "Is there any transitional training needed
                         for weather changes?"

                         Action: TRADOC Training Desk
                         Info: TRADOC Surgeon

Tab b. Messages re: AIR AMBUI.ANCE ISSUR
Ft. Sill and Bliss are still making a lot of noise re: the need for
RC support of mission. CINCFOR has requested ARCENT FWD to re-evaluate needs
in theater. In light of tab c. this action is to be worked between TRADOC
Pars. and FORSCOM. Ft. Jackson "Can Do" requires no RC support short of a
                national emergency.

Tab c. RC Unit Support for TRADOC Installations
Msg. reinforces installations requirement to direct all requests to
                TRADOC Hdqtrs. FM IIOBPLANS

Tab d. Updated Malaria Chemoprophylaxis Guidelines for Operation Desert Shield
                                                               FM DA/SGPS-PSP-D

Soldiers deploying to eastern Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait,
Qatar'or the United Arab Emirates need not initiate chemoprophylaxis, but should
have a six week supply of chloroquine phosphate tabs. on ha-ad. Other then eastern
Saudi Arabia (Riyadh and Dhahran) malaria occurs year round. Soldiers deploying to
unknown sights or stopping in areas of active malarial transmission should begin
malaria chemo. prior to deployment. (500mgm chloroquine tab. weekly)
Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and Oman have limited transmission while both Yemens as
well as Iran have widespread cases. Drug resistant malaria is not considered
                a problem.

Tab a. Ft. Ben Harrison due to lack of DEH staff and physical plant demolition,
                has facility expansion capability problems.
HSC units may exchange deployable pers. for FORSCOM non-deployable pers.
on a one for one basis. MOS and skill level must match.
