File: aabff_03.txt- I elected to rainbow pilots to the squadron with the least amount of sorties for that go. They can jump in a spare there. With the airfield spread out, we plugged them wherever we could and brought anything FMC onto the schedule that was "geographi- cally close". Otherwise you may not have the time to get permis- sion to cross to the other side from tower or even be able to if all the other jets have taxied. - I had to prepare for increasingly tight turn times as the war progresses. Make sure the well motivated and trained load crews are in abundance. - For deviation purposes, only non-effective combat sorties need to be reported i.e. ground aborts that do not go with their package or jets that IFE or air abort back in after take off. - We flew the 40 X 40 and they all made it back again!!! JAN 19: DAY 3 - Because of the possibility of Israeli involvement after Irag launched SCUD's on them, our targets have changed. [(b)(5)] We are revisiting areas in search of the mobile SCUD's, and search and destroy of the missiles, mov- bile or fixed, has become our new primary mission. - We are slated to fly a 48 X 40. - With the change in targeting comes a change in the frag. Now lines 1-8 and lines 41-48 are on alert. They stepped at 0915 local to go after SCUD's. We must exercise extreme flexibility now that are targets are so non-firm and likely to change. - At [(b)(1)sec 3.4 (b)(4)] local there were more SCUD's launched at Israel and the frag changed again. The second go, all 40 lines fuzes have been changed to instantaneous. Lines 65-68 have 10 seconds on them for air bursts. - The second go we launched 38 out of the scheduled 40 lines. The ground abort had FO in the cockpit. The spare he stepped to had a fuel strainer leak. The second was a sympathy. - We launched 8 more SCUD hunter sorties at noon from the 33rd. These were lines 25-32. This means that we had 16+8+38 jets in the air at one time for a grand total of 62. Good time to let the troops catch a breather. - I felt the need to remind everyone that no one person is indis- pensable to the war. At this point it looks like it will drag on for longer than expected and it is important that people get on a regular work shift. Everyone has to fight the tendency to micro- manage, it doesn't work. If you don't have confidence in your
