J. Maintenance of Medical Material and Equipment:
(1) Request for emergency repair will be directed to the DUSO.
(2) Equipment will not be modified or altered without written authorization
from the Division Surgeon.
(3) Approved modifications will be effected only by technically qualified
personnel.
(4) Unserviceable medical equipment will be evacuated from Battalion Aid
stations to Division clearing stations. Division medical maintenance personnel will
normally only repair equipment as far forward as the Division clearing stations
located in the Brigade Support Areas. If the equipment cannot be repaired with
assets from within the Division, it will be evacuated to the medical supply, optical
and maintenance unit (MEDSON) located in the Corps area. Maintenance contact
teamg will deploy forward from the MEDSOM when available.
12. MEDICAL EVACUATION.
a. General Consideration:
(1) Casualties will be evacuated no further to the rear than demanded by
heir condition or the tactical situation.
(2) Patients will be evacuated only after adequate airway and ventilation Is
assured, external hemorrhage is controlled, fractures are gplinted, and shock therapy
is instituted to the extent that medical and field expedient resources permit at each
treatment level.
(3) Aeromedical evacuation is the preferred method of transporting seriously
injured patients, with ground ambulance providing back-up support when weather, enemv
action, or availability of aircraft limit air evacuation.
(4) Ground ambulances will be used to the maximum extent possible for
evacuation of other than seriously injured patients.
(5) Medical elements of the Aviation Battalion, Engineer Battalion,
Artillery Battalion, Air Defense Artillery Battalion and Cavalry Sqdn will be used
or evacuation, providing they are properly raanned and equipped-to protect the
casualty, IAW FM B-15.
(0) Special 9arking of Casualties. To attract attention and ensure caution
in treatment and handling, certain casualties will have a colored mark placed on the
forehead with iodine, merthiolate, grease pencil, or other non-irritating substance
as follows:
