with summary accounting instead of by serial number.
However, this type of accounting was never actively used
by the division due to the quickness of the war.
Vehicle repair parts continued to be a problem. The
division's ASL zero balance maintained a rate of 61%.
During this period, combat vehicles were intensively
managed with faults forwarded directly to managers at the
DMMC and parts placed on logistical packages for the
following day. Long lines of communication complicated
the supply of repair parts to forward units. The maneuver
control system was useful in transmitting unit nonmission
capable data during periods when units were stationary.
The DMMC had personnel forward each day visiting units to
determine what their problems were. Controlled
substitution was selectively used throughout the period
with approval from the ADC(S) to keep a maximum number of
vehicles/systems mission capable. Approximately three
days prior to B-Day, the ADC(S) authorized the DMMC
material readiness officer to control substitute
throughout the division to maximize the division's combat
power. Generally, throughout the entire period, all major
weapon systems maintained a 90% operational readiness
rate. Some systems fell below this goal due to high use
and old age. The maneuver brigades scouts' M3 fleet was
not traded for the M3AP and consistently fell below the
90% objective. Aviation maintenance suffered from
shortages of parts and components, and high use. The key
aviation assets remained slightly below the objective of
an 80% operational readiness rate.
A summary of our strength figures during the defense
of Wadi Al Batin:
17 Jan 100 percent
27 Jan 101 percent
As the division first encountered enemy forces,
chaplains monitored Enemy Prisoners of War (EPWS) to
assure appropriate ministry and compliance with Geneva
Conventions. Chaplains offered religious support to EPWs
of their own faith and briefed EPWs on our commitment to
the free exercise of religion.
On 20 Feb 91, when the 2nd Ede Task Force received
its first combat casualties, chaplain UMTs from 1-5 Cav
and 3-6@ Field Artillery responded to the battalion aid
station and provided ministry to two KlAs and eight WIRS.
