       6. @ Prisons:
               a. if the Bafathists suspect anyone of anything against the
government, they incarcerate the person into one of many "hidden",
underground prisons. 'The government then conducts "medical research"
upon the prisoners, such as giving male hormones to female prisoners,
most who now look like men, with masculine features and beards.
@b. one source was imprisoned in 1980. His jailors
systematically tortured him. They hung him from the ceiling, ropes
around the second toe of each foot (he showed the interrogator his
stretched toes); another time they inserted a high-pressure hose into
his anus, with the water pressure forcing feces out of his nose and
mouth. Jailors would also crowd almost Boo prisoners into a five
meter square room, lined up in rows, with one row standing, the other
sitting; every two hours the prisoners were allowed to switch
positions. Every week, five men carrying clubs, chains, and a bag
would randomly choose a prisoner, tie him up in the bag, and beat the
bag until it was soaked with blood.
               c. Resistance fighters freed approximately 250 prisoners from
a secret jail (entrance a hidden door in a mosque) in Najif. Most
were old, emaciated, and blind. Many had been jailed since before
Hussein came to power. DOI 3 Mar 91
               d. If a person is sentenced to jail they are usually
imprisoned first in a "forgotten jail." Family cannot visit them. No
light enters the prison. Jailors feed the prisoners through slits in
the doors. DOI 30 Mar 91
               e. Shaaba 5, the torture/execution group led by Ali Hassan
Majid, transported Kuwaitis who'd killed Iraqis to Baghdad for torture
ajid often
visited to watch interrogations and the subsequent executions. one
common torture/execution technique was dipping the prisoner into an
acid bath; the remains were ground up and fed to the fish in a pool
at the prison. DOI 28 Mar 91
               f. other sources have been beaten with cables, electrocuted,
burnt, hung by various body parts, sexually molested, had their
fingernails removed, and subjected to psychological torture. one
source is paralyzed due to the torture he suffered.

       7. @ Mosques/religious sites:
               a. Helicopters and tanks attacked the Al Abbas and the Al
Hussien mosques in Karbala, killing an unknown number of civilians.
       DOI 8 Mar 91
               b. In Al Khufa, a village near Najif, on 23 Mar 91, women and
children sought refuge in a mosque. Soldiers destroyed it with
       artillery fire.
               c. In Najif, RGFC soldiers captured the Holy Temple and
       destroyed it.
