      J-3 HOT WEATHER @.IORK cLoTHrNB-

      a. ISSUES Thw-.Icoveralls" utilized as work clothing -For this
operation did not meet the functional needs of the mission.

      b. DISCUSSION: Massive amounts of equipment had to be quickly
processed by relatively few soldiers under conditions of extreme heat
stress. The temperature was regularly in the 110 degree range with wet
bulb readings to as high as 98 at the part. Far greater extremes were
experienced in the staging areas during processing of parked vehicles.
Under such conditions of extreme heat stress, medical concerns should
be primary determinants in the selection of work clothing. Medical
concerns mandate that the clothing should be loose,' light weight,
absorbent, 100% cotton, two piece with a loose blouse outside of the
trousers to allow air flow but allowing this to be secured under the
trousers for safety when working on moving equipment. With that type
*of upper garment no undershirt should be required. (During this
eration,in order to improve cooling, soldiers regularly needed to
;move the top halves of their coveralls tying the sleeves around their
waist. This resulted in a safety hazard.) NO elastic bands or
synthetic material should bit utilized. The sleeves should be long +or
protection but.loose to allow air flow and rolling when needed. The
coveralls utilized for this operation meet none a+ the above criteria.

      C. RECOMMENDATIONS: The coveralls should be replaced by more
      appropriately designed hot weather clothing.
