              4. Phase Two: Defense of Wadi Al Batin


                  a. Phase Two began an P6 January 1991. The brigade
              occupied a defense in sector with the FEBA located from
              NS839995 to NS992997 to PS139993. The brigade initially
              defended with three task forces abreast with 1-7 Cavalry
              screening the front of the division. On 6 February the
              brigade assumed responsibility for screening the western
              portion of the divisional screen line. Phase Two concluded
              on 15 February when the screen line was moved north to
              cover the international border with direct fires.


                  b. Important staff actions conducted during this phase
              included:


                      1) The planning priorities for the battle staff
                          included,
                          a) Continued defensive operations south of the
              Saudi-Iraqi border.
                          b) The on order mission to counterattack into
              the 2d Brigade sector to destroy enemy forces penetrating
              along the Wadi Al Batin or the Ruqi Highway.
                          c) Complete plans and orders for offensive
              operations during Operation DESERT STORM.

                     P) Major orders published%
                          a) FRAGO 91-02-9: Counterattack to destroy enemy
              forces penetrating along the Wadi Al Batin or the Ruqi
              Highway. Issued to subordinate units on the morning of I
              February.
                          b) FRAGO 91-2-11: Reconnaissance of the man-made
              berm along the international border. Issued to subordinate
              units on li February.
                          c) FRAGO 91-2-12: Relief of 1-7 Cav on the
              western 1/3 of the division sector. Issued to subordinate
              units on the morning of 5 February.
                          d) OPLAN 91-3 (DESERT STORM): Movement through
              the IID breach of Iraqi defenses or trail the 1AD and 3AD
              an an envelopment of the enemy@s western flank. Conduct
              offensive operations against the Republican Guard forces.
              Issued to subordinate units on 5 February.
