               2.(U) Operation Desert Shield/Storm

               3.(U) KEYWORDS: MOPP Serviceability/Disposal

               4.(U) Title: M17Al Mask Carrier

5.(U) Observation: Mask carriers were not holding up to the
continuous wear to which they were exposed.
6.(U) Discussion: Most of the soldiers in the brigade got 2-3
months of continuous wear before straps and snaps broke or even
the carrier itself tore. This created a real problem since no
replacements were readily available in country. An interim fix
was achieved with the deployment of the mask maintenance facility
from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Mask carriers did not become
available, in limited quantities, until early February 1991.

7.(U) Lessons Learned: M17AI carriers are not designed to
withstand the rigors of continuous wear to which they were exposed
               during operation Desert Shield/Storm.

8.(U) Recommended Action: The Chemical Research, Development and
Engineering Center and the US Army Chemical School ensure that the
new mask carrier is tested under conditions similar to those
               experienced during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
