1.(U) Submitted by lith ADA NBC, Cpt Henderson, AV9785624
2.(U) Operation Desert Shield/Storri
3.(U) KEYWORDS: Safety/NAAK
4.(U) Title: Nerve Agent Antidote Kit Accidents.
5.(U) Observation: Several incidences of accidental discharge of
Nerve Agent Antidote Kits were reported.
6.(U) Discussion: All the reported cases of accidental discharge
of NAAKs occurred when soldiers sat on their protective mask
carriers, which contained the autoinjectors. Sitting on the
carrier caused the safety cap on the autoinjector to come loose,
thereby discharging its contents. Soldiers were injected with
both atropine and 2-PAMC1, however after medical evaluation no
serious short term effects were noted.
7.(U) Lessons Learned: Soldiers should not sit on the protective
mask, and should check autoinjectors carried in mask carrier daily
to ensure that the safety cap is secured in place.
8.(U) Recommended action: None.
