1. (U) Julls number, # ., submitted by lith ADA BDE S2,
Cpt. Weiner, (915)568-1370.
2. (U) Operation Desert Shield 90, Aug 90.
3. (U) Keywords: BDE S2 - Deployment phase
4. (U) Title: Map Support during Deployment and Sustained
Operations
5. (U) observation: The Ilth ADA BDE and its subordinate units
did not have adequate nap support.
6. (U) Discussion:
a. (U) The BDE requires the following map scales:
1:1,000,000, 1:500,000, 1:250,000, and 1:50,000, (Saudi Arabia and
surrounding countries).
b. ( ) The BDE submitted emergency map requests to the
Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) prior to deployment. Map requests
were met by DMA prior to the air campaign.
C. ( ) The three to six month wait on the nap requests
delayed thorough planning and reconnaissance of the terrain.
d. ( ) The BDE sought map support from 18th ABC G-2. Most
of the initial map requirement were met by Corps.
e. ( ) The BDE continues to have a map requirement for other
contingency plans and operations.
7. (U) Lesson Learned. Extremely difficult situation to resolve
since DMA priority was not initially in production of the maps in
support of the area of operation. Difficult to anticipate the
magnitude of this operation on such short notice.
8. (U) Reconriended Actions:
a. (U) Basic load of maps be available for every contingency
mission in the adequate number and scales. BDE must ensure that
all it subordinates have prepared for the map requirement
pertaining to their mission.
b. (U) Prepare and disseminate a map requirement plan and
distribution (i.e. identify the numbers needed by scale) for the
BDE HQs and staff. This will eliminate repetitive and unnecessary
requests from the same section.
