What Can YOU Do?
Here are several actions that you can take to strengthen your file:
Ensure your photo is ourrentl AR 640-30 states a five year
old photograph in good. However,, remember you want to present
yourself in the best light and a current photograph is the best way
to start. We recommend the photograph be within the year. Board
members tend to favor files with more recent photographs.
Review your microfiche and officer record brief, ensure all
items are correct.
if possible visit PERSCOM (DC Branch) to review your file.
Review your microfiche, officer record brief, and other pertinent
documents prior to your visit. Have questions and concerns
prepared; this will facilitate the interview with your assignment
manager.
Ask your senior rater, at the beginning of the rating period,
to provide you with his/her senior rater profile. Cumulative board
surveys indicate that the senior rater portion (Part VII) - of the
ORR is the most important part.
Selection boards have consistently indicated the importance of
the duty description in assessing the performance and potential of
an officer. In the past, many duty descriptions have not been
specific and have failed to give full credit for the scope of
his/her responsibilities. Effective use of the Support Form with
the associated communication, counseling and coaching will improve
the content of the duty description. Duty descriptions should be:
Clear and concise
Free of jargon or acronyms peculiar to the environment and not
clearly understood by officers throughout the Army.
Rmpbasize the specific functions required of the rated orficer
and note conditions peculiar to the assignment. Where appropriate,
the duty description should indicate the level of responsibility in
terms of dollars, facilities, people, and types of equipment.
Only when reports contain accurate, clearly understandable
duty descriptions can selection boards and career managers obtain
an accurate assessment of the officer when reading the performance
narratives (how well the officer performed) and comparing them with
the duty descriptions (what the officer was charged to do) .
