            b. (U) Tasks

                  (1) (U) Establish GRREG Collection Points to receive, account
       for and evacuate remains.

                  (2) (U) Remains will be prepared for evacuation as follows:

                       (a) (U) Collect all remains found in area.

                       (b) (U) Tag all remains with Name, Rank, SSN and Unit. DD
       Form 1380 or equivalent (blank paper tag)      should be used for tagging.
       Ensure identity is verified by an officer or senior enlisted member.
       Unidentifiable remains should be tagged as unidentified with the Date, Time
       and Location of recovery.

                       (c) (U) Leave all personal effects found on the remains
       with the remains.

                       (d) (U) Do not remove identification tags from the remains.
       Leave identification tags around the neck of the body.

                       (e) (U) Wrap the remains securely in a poncho, poncho liner
       or sleeping bag.    Tag the packaged remains with a second tag with the
       information required in (b) above.

                       (f) (U) Evacuate the remains as a routine medevac or to the
       supporting CSSE which is collecting the remains. Use hand receipts for all
       remains to ensure that a positive chain of custody is established.

                  (3) (U) Unit commanders are responsible for graves registration
       functions for all who die within their area of responsibility. Commanders
       are authorized to bury remains on the battlefield to continue with a
       mission.   This should be done only as a last resort in an emergency
       situation.


            c. (U) Coordinating Instructions

                  (1) (U) When units must move prior to recovery of remains,
       commanders will ensure that sufficient information is recorded to locate
       the, remains at a later time.      When the tactical situation precludes
ordinates of suspected casualties will be reported
       via GRREG channels to USMARCENT with information copies to the THIRD NCR.


                  (2)  (U) Emergency burial of deceased US personnel will be
       promptly reported to USMARCENT via GRREG channels and to the THIRD NCR.
